A Utah REAL ID is a type of credential that meets the enhances security features that are now recommended by the federal U.S. Government. Starting in 2020, the REAL ID Act will require you to have a secure form of identification in order to do certain things, such as board domestic flights or enter specific federal buildings. The most notable difference of a secure ID is that it has a gold star in the corner.
The state Driver License Division (DLD) has been issuing secure UT REAL ID cards that comply with the federal requirements for several years, meaning that you may already have a compliant form of identification. However, most previously-issued cards do not have the gold star that makes these credentials fully compliant with the REAL ID Act. With that in mind, you will need to get another license or ID before the 2020 deadline so that you can continue using your card to fly domestically or enter federal buildings.
Drivers who renew their REAL ID drivers license in UT before 2020 will receive a renewed credential that contains a star. Alternatively, motorists who do not renew until after the 2020 deadline will automatically receive a complimentary duplicate card with a star. All new license and ID card applicants will get a card with the star as well. Read More
